About Griffons

General Information & Temperament

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon—often just called a “Griff”—is a versatile hunting dog with a loyal, family-friendly personality. They’re especially loved for their rugged looks, intelligence, and ability to work both on land and in the water. Griffons are known for being affectionate and loyal, they bond closely with their family and are gentle with kids. They even are known as "velcro dogs" because they stay close to their people, so they do best to not be left home alone for long periods of time. Griffs are eager to please which makes hunting training easier than most breeds, but they are sensitive, so positive reinforcement is needed for this breed!  We love this hunting breed, as they are high energy but also love to slow down and snuggle on the couch.  They definitely will keep you laughing with their strong personalities!

Hunting & Exercise

Wirehaired Pointing Griffons are high energy dogs!  They need to run a lot and stay active 2+ hours per day. They love to hike, swim and retrieve.  Without enough activity, this breed will find a way to get your attention or be destructive due to boredom. It is required to have a yard for this breed and an active lifestyle to keep the Griffon happy and healthy! Hunting is crucial for this breed as they are bred as a Gun dog, and excel at Pointing game birds, Retrieving on land and water, and Tracking wounded game.  They’re often described as a “supreme all-around hunting dog,” especially for upland birds and waterfowl.
